Warranty
I stand behind my work and will repair any failures which are my responsibility (e.g. soundboard collapse). Transportation of the instrument to and from me is the client’s responsibility.
If the instrument is <3 years old, I’ll take care of the full cost of repair.
If the instrument is ≥3 years old, I’ll take care of the full cost of labor. Any materials are the client’s responsibility.
Many types of damage are not my responsibility. Damage from dropping the instrument, exposing it to sudden temperature changes, storing it in an excessively dry environment, or other forms of carelessness are not covered. Maintenance tasks (e.g. regulating the semitone switches), regular wear-and-tear (e.g. tuning pins slipping), and cosmetic damage (e.g. scratches) are also not covered under this warranty. I will repair these instruments (when possible), but I will charge for it.
It is your responsibility to address issues promptly. If a crack develops or the soundboard is failing, the strings need to be loosened and the instrument sent to me to repair. If you procrastinate on repairs for many months, what would have been a simple repair can turn into a much more involved repair or even firewood. I take responsibility for the initial failure, but not for negligence in getting it repaired promptly.
Some damage is difficult to ascribe responsibility for – e.g. maybe a crack developed from being stored in poor conditions, or maybe it was a failure in the structure. In these cases, we will discuss a shared-responsibility payment point.
It is important to note that my instruments prioritize acoustic qualities over toughness. The best sounding instruments are built very lightly and use brittle woods which ring instead of thud. They must be treated accordingly.
